BAGS, BAGS & MORE BAGS—

More thoughts on bags—here’s an interesting read about cotton totes from the NYTimes. “An organic cotton tote needs to be used 20,000 times to offset its overall impact of production.”

Surprising data points on paper bags, did you know…

Poised as the ‘good’ replacement for plastic, but, wait, are they? Paper bags are bigger than plastic, which means they take up more space in landfills. Paper bags generate 70 more air pollutants than plastic. They generate 50 times more water pollutants than plastic. It takes 91 percent less energy to recycle a plastic bag than it does a paper bag!

Plastic bags — do we even need to discuss??

Re*Gift Bag
from $22.00

Ideal for a holiday gift of wine, olive oil, or a bag of cookies, our Re*Gift bag is all about the gifting—use it and reuse it and reuse it again. (Scribe’s bottle of Pinot Noir is not included, but certainly recommended!)

We think a great deal about what products to develop and what problem they actually solve. We aren’t really interested in design for design sake—our designs need to work hard, to serve a bigger purpose.

When it comes to a bag, one has to ask, doesn‘t the world have enough bags? Does a Re*Gift bag solve a problem? Should we just NOT use a bag, isn’t that the best solution?

**(Goodness knows, I have tried this, only to drop everything that I thought I could hold freely so as to save that one bag—spoiler alert, it doesn’t work.)

The greater concept behind our Re*Gift bag is to think about the pieces that goes into the design. Our Re*Gift bag is made from materials that already exist—the upcycled Levi’s; the leather and linen lining are deadstock fabrics from a local jobber. Potentially, these materials were soon to depart to waste and an eventual landfill where they would take up loads of space and take years, if ever, to decompose.

Additionally, the bags are produced in partnership with local workers who were paid fair wages for their efforts.

The bag has many uses—certainly not single use. And as you are to gift the bag, we hope it offers a moment to share an idea about how we consume and how we can repurpose, reuse and create circular economies within our own communities. We actually hope that this Re*Gift Bag finds it way back to you, with a new bottle of something inside of it. Only then, to be handed off again, to the next lucky recipient.

We know that we will continue to consume, but our goal is to help you consume in a way that is restorative and healing to our planet.

In the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, the Re*Gift bag owes a bit of its sensibility to our favorite social commentator, Seinfeld.
