‘Gifts in Kind’ that are so kind to a space.

Part of my work with Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco (HGSF), is developing a pilot program where the goal is to bring inspired, sustainable, and of course, affordable interior finish solutions to HGSF’s properties.

I partner with Board Member/Architect Heidi Hansen and together we strategize holistic interior stories for the many home ownership projects that HGSF is currently working on. As the cost of building Affordable Homes in the Bay Area is far from affordable, our mission is to find partners, donations, and new practices that could deliver more sustainable, equitable solutions that stay within budget. Creative problem-solving at its best—just happens to be a strong suit of mine.

Many people I speak with are not fully aware that Habitat creates Home OWNERSHIP opportunities for families. That in itself is a game changer—families gain equity, have protected mortgage payments based on their income levels and receive 0% down, 0% interest loans. When the families decide, at some point in the future, to move on from their current home, the property is sold back to HGSF who then finds the next family in need of a first time home ownership opportunity. Building homes that can stand up to years of living means that HGSF gets to spend their resources on building more homes, as opposed to remodeling homes where the finishes prove to not stand the test of time.

There are so many exciting details to share about this work (read more here…) but I’ll start with this stunning and ENDURING fixture that will now welcome 20 families and their friends each and every time they enter the new development in Redwood City.

Thanks to generous partners like City Lights, who donated this Hubbardton Forge light fixture—which was hand made in Vermont—things are looking a lot brighter within Affordable Homes in the Bay Area.

The Jefferson property in Redwood City and it’s beautiful, modern exterior; it will soon be home to 20 families.

Design boards come to life as the homes are nearing completion. I love the finished product.

The Hubbardton Forge fixture, which was a donation from City Lights in San Francisco, adds an industrial elegance to the entryway. The metal work is a wonderful complement to the exposed concrete walls and polished concrete floors. The fixtures casts beautiful, subtle patterns on the Affluent Cream (Valspar GIK) walls and adds more phenomenal light to the architecture’s play of light through the front facade.
